Ellen McGill Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Ellen McGill who was a long-time medical technologist in the Chicago area. Ellen was an active member in ASCLS-IL (formerly ICLSA) and a past president. She was the Director of the School of Medical Technology at Illinois Masonic Hospital. This scholarship was started to honor Ellen’s contributions to the profession.

This scholarship will be awarded to an active member of ASCLS-IL that has not previously attended the Legislative Symposium or the Joint Annual Meeting to pay for expenses. Two scholarships of up to $750 each may be awarded annually. Funding is available to cover relevant expenses including cost of travel, registration fees and meals up to $750. All receipts must be submitted to the ASCLS-IL Treasurer. Award recipients will be required to write an article for the ASCLS-IL newsletter summarizing their experience at Legislative Days or the National Meeting.

Eligibility

1. Be a PF1, PF2, or student member of ASCLS and a resident of Illinois.

2. Demonstrate prior involvement in the society at the local or state level.

3. Demonstrate the potential for future leadership on the ASCLS-IL Board of Directors.

4. Application must be for a meeting the applicant has not previously attended. 

Requirements

1. A member of the ASCLS-IL Board of Directors must submit a letter on behalf of the candidate describing the candidate’s involvement in the society to date as well as his or her potential for future contributions to the society. 

2. Applicants are selected based on their past involvement and potential future contributions to the society. The candidate will submit a short biographical essay which, at a minimum, should address the following topics:

    • Past involvement in the society.
    • Goals and interests for future involvement in the society.
    • Ideas for the growth and activities of the society.
    • Reasons for attending Legislative Days or the ASCLS National Meeting, including what you expect to learn and how you will use that information to the betterment of yourself, your employer, and the society.
    • Explanation of the need for this scholarship to support your attendance at the meeting.

Deadline & Award Notification

Completed Application and materials for scholarships to the Legislative Symposium meeting must be received by August 15

Completed Application and materials for scholarships to the Joint Annual Meeting must be received by May 15

Notification of awards will be made by March and July. An email will be sent to the recipient informing him or her of the award. 

Future Leaders Scholarship Award

This award is open to members of ASCLS-IL in their final year of an MLS/MLT program, or in their first year as a professional, who is interested and intends on being involved in society leadership.

Award

Two scholarships of $500 to attend the ASCLS-IL State Meeting or ASCLS Annual Meeting will be awarded each calendar year. Notification of awards will be made by March 31st of the application year. A letter via email will be sent to the recipient informing him or her of the award.

Eligibility

  1. Be a student member or first year professional member of ASCLS and a resident of Illinois.

  2. Demonstrate an interest in involvement in the society at the local or state level.

  3. Demonstrate the potential for future leadership on the ASCLS-IL Board of Directors or on committees within the society.

  4. Applicant must commit to service on an ASCLS-IL Committee for the year following the receipt of the scholarship

Requirements

1. A member of the ASCLS-IL Board of Directors or committee member must submit a letter on behalf of the candidate describing the candidate’s merit for the scholarship, professional/academic strengths and potential for involvement in ASCLS-IL leadership positions.

2. Applicants are selected based on their past involvement and potential future contributions to the society. The candidate will submit a short biographical essay which, at a minimum, should address the following topics:

    • Past involvement in the society (if applicable).
    • Goals and interests for future involvement in the society with specific reference to plans for involvement on preferred committee.
    • Reasons for attending meeting.
    • Explanation of the need for this scholarship to support your attendance at the meeting.

Completed applications and supporting documents must be received by March 15th of the application year.

Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity (AMTF) Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarships

Alpha Mu Tau is a national fraternity whose purpose is the advancement of professionals in the clinical laboratory sciences. One of the prime activities of the fraternity is the granting of graduate and undergraduate scholarships for clinical laboratory science students.

Award

The amount of each scholarship depends on the AMTF general fund income (donations) and the return from and donations to the AMTF endowment funds. There are nine endowment funds; Each fund awards one, or more, scholarships per year in addition to the general fund awards.

The amount and number of awards are determined by the AMTF Finance Committee and the AMTF Scholarship Committee. 20 -25 Graduate and Undergraduate scholarships are awarded annually in amounts from $1,000.00 to $4,000.00. The awards are made during the ASCLS annual meeting. Awardees are notified by mail.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents

ASCLS membership is required
Applicants must be accepted into an NAACLS accredited program in Clinical Laboratory Science, to include Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Technician

Applicants must be accepted into or are in an approved Masters or Doctoral program in areas related to Clinical Laboratory Science including Clinical Laboratory Education or Management Programs

Applicants must be in or entering or in their last year of study in the calendar year in which the award is made

Applicants cannot complete their education before the scholarship is awarded in September

Only one application is needed for all undergraduate scholarships

Only one application is needed for the graduate scholarships

Requirements

  • Completed Application
  • 2 letters of recommendation (LOR) **
  • 2 performance score (PS) sheets
  • Official college transcript(s)

** One LOR and PS should be from the Program Director, if enrolled in program; or Clinical Laboratory Supervisor, if accepted to program and not yet enrolled. One LOR and PS should be a personal reference (non-relative) regarding the applicant’s work ethic

ASCLS Education and Research Fund Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarships

The ASCLS Education and Research Fund is the charitable foundation of ASCLS and was founded to encourage and assist educational and scientific research in the field of medical laboratory science. The Fund’s Scholarship Program supports education for students, practitioners and educators. Applicants must be ASCLS members

The graduate scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in an approved Master or Doctoral program. One scholarship for $3,000 is awarded yearly. Membership in ASCLS is required.

Undergraduate scholarships are awarded to deserving undergraduate students in a NAACLS-approved program. Up to five scholarships are awarded yearly in amounts from $1,500 to $2,500

Recipients of these scholarships are announced at the ASCLS Awards Ceremony which occurs at the ASCLS Annual Meeting.
